Red Springtails

Lobella sp.

Lobella sp., our Red springtails, are a striking reddish-orange Collembola in the Neanuridae family, easily recognized by their plump, deeply segmented bodies and rich coloration against dark substrate and leaf litter.

Unlike standard cleanup-crew species, Neanurids have modified, piercing mouthparts adapted for sipping fungal hyphae, algae, and biofilm rather than chewing bulk waste — making them an excellent supplemental species that targets microscopic mold growth.

They reproduce more slowly than generalist species like our Asian Oranges and do not jump, moving slowly through the environment, so they shine best as a complementary addition to an established colony rather than a standalone cleanup crew.

Hailing from tropical environments, they thrive in warm, highly humid environments (75-85°F) with rich, soil-based setups and plenty of damp leaf litter to burrow into.
