Springtails are tiny hexapods in the order Collembola, rarely more than a few millimeters long, that live in the top layer of soil and leaf litter worldwide. In the wild they're primary decomposers; in a bioactive vivarium or terrarium, that same instinct makes them a self-sustaining maintenance crew you never have to clean up after.
A healthy population patrols the substrate surface, breaking down mold, fungal growth, waste, and decaying plant matter before it can build up. That keeps humidity-loving enclosures from turning sour or anaerobic, and pairs well with isopods, which handle the heavier waste while springtails mop up the microscopic stuff.
